As a first time public relations intern, I think there are a few things I have learned that the
classroom does not teach you. There is only so much preparation that can happen for
anything until you have to do the real thing. I am so blessed to have been able to land an
internship doing what I hope to do in the future. Learning experiences are everywhere,
but really being able to put yourself out there is very different.
I have taken numerous classes for my mass communications major in public relations. I
am going to be a senior this upcoming year so finishing up these classes means I have had
a little taste of everything. I am a social media intern this summer and I took a class
specifically over advanced social media this past semester. While we handled one client
as a class, I learned a lot about analytics and targeting an audience.
Jump into the real job where you do not handle one client, you handle five. Sounds a bit
daunting, but with amazing people around you to help it is easier than it sounds.
Creativity is a must, and what I had practiced for one mock client with a group of people,
I am now doing for five clients by myself. Honestly I love doing it though, setting goals
and getting them done make me happy! What I am doing is super fun and I love being
able to make posts for clients.
To me, public relations is putting your best foot forward as a brand. It is creating
awareness of something that someone believed in enough to do. To make people engage
with a brand or company that could benefit another is the ultimate goal. I cannot wait to
finish up college and learn even more about public relations and what it has in store for
me.
