My name is Deidre Carrillo and I am a communications major at Texas A&M University- San Antonio. I was drawn to Public Relations in high school when I was assigned as Student Public Relations Officer for an engineering team that built electrathon vehicles. In my free time, I enjoy to trying new restaurants and visiting new places in San Antonio as well as art and photography.
I heard about Sammis | Ochoa through a colleague (Thanks Gabby!), I quickly applied and here I am as one of their Fall interns. My first day as an intern I was absolutely terrified as I wanted to make a good impression, I even got lost along the way to our weekly staff meeting at the Pearl. Upon meeting the Sammis | Ochoa team for the first time, they were very welcoming and made me feel apart of the team. Their weekly staff meetings begin with sharing positive feedback about each other, I found that to be beneficial as our hard work was being appreciated.
My job as an intern is to assist with posting content to several clients social media accounts. I was drawn to the idea of working in the operating room as soon as I heard about the internship opportunity. Helping cover Dr. Jeneby’s surgeries on Facebook Live and Snapchat has been eye-opening and rewarding. It’s not everyday you get to go inside of an operating room to record surgeries. It encouraged me to work even harder and to be confident in myself and my work as I’m not the most extroverted person.
Social Media has become a game changer in advertisement- it creates relationships with a company and their followers. Through observation, followers enjoy watching live streams of surgeries and asking Dr. Jeneby questions they may have.
I appreciate that S|O entrusted me to work independently and allowed me to be creative with the content I post. At first being able to work independently was scary, but they were eager to help with any issues or concerns that I may have had. I felt a part of the team as the work I was doing was contributing to the success of the company and their clients. For the first part of my internship S|O was working remotely and I enjoyed being able to work from the comfort of my couch or a local coffee shop, it made working relaxing and fun.
I’ve learned how to use resources like SproutSocial to help schedule posts throughout the day, making my workload easier and well organized. As an already organized person I kept a planner with time stamps of each post I had scheduled for the day to ensure there were no repeats of content.
This internship has assured me Public Relations is the career field I want to work in. It has also encouraged me to continue expanding my skill sets. I hope to continue growing and learning from my time here with Sammis | Ochoa.
