My name is Zahra, pronounced like the clothing store. Last name Hussain, pronounced like our ex-president’s middle name. Ever since I heard of Sammis | Ochoa through my student organization, I had been extremely intrigued by the agency. The company culture, how free flowing and positive their blog writing was, and now here I am writing one as a Sammis | Ochoa intern! Although, I still did not really know what to expect when walking into S|O on the first day. Unfortunately, since I have class in the morning, I do not get to the office until after the team huddle. Although, I did get to attend one on the very first day of my internship, this huddle alone was what made me initially fall in love with S|O. I had never seen a company culture so vibrant, cohesive, and open.
The team began by going in a circle and everyone saying their highs and lows of the week. This alone caught my attention as everyone was positive and saw the bright side of things as well as how they could help each other improve during the week. The co-founders, Tanya and Mario discussed how we could improve as a company as a whole and was open to ideas instead of just telling everyone what was going to happen which have seen in many of my past internships. Another thing that has been different from my past internships is that I feel like I am trusted with more responsibilities then checking over a document or stocking the coffee area, which is what I regularly did in past internships. I have gotten the opportunity to write PR publications, cover news segments, and handle client’s social media directly.
So far, I have extremely enjoyed working at Sammis | Ochoa. One thing that was particularly different from my past internships was that we would be working remotely until a new office was found. I had always worked in an office environment, but I honestly loved working remotely, sitting outside and working independently, whilst being trusted to get the job done. I have had over six different internships in the past ranging all the way from Disney to Boss Creative, a San Antonio based marketing company. Throughout these different experiences I feel as though I have taken away much knowledge on how to approach a client, handle social media, and complete various tasks I may not have performed before. Within all of these internships I learned a lot about the ins and outs of social media. I learned that every client has a different language and style when it comes to their social media so you cannot write posts in the same style for every client. Also, there are resources such as SproutSocial and Hootsuite so you can schedule posts instead of going to each individual social media outlet to post the same thing. I have learned to write relevant hashtags, to not post too much, and to make the posts visually attractive. Before interning, I had no idea you could use resources such as SproutSocial to look at the insights of your posts and observe how many people your post are reaching. I have enjoyed my 4 months here at Sammis | Ochoa significantly and I look forward to continue learning from this amazing and tight-nit team of PR experts.
